Creating through capturing. Creating through capturing.
Capturing through the lens. Capturing through the lens.
Hey there!
Welcome to The About Page. What is it you would like to learn About?
About Me
I’m Daniel Geesen. Passionate Photographer. Vegan Chef, Food Stylist, and Blogger. Background Artiste. Friend to Animals. Amateur Genealogist. Abysmal Cellist. Cashew Cheese Connoisseur. Embarrassing Dad. INFP.
My interest in photography started a long time ago, in a land far away. I grew up in Montana, an area known for its outstanding natural beauty and dramatic skies (aptly nicknamed Big Sky Country). I think that played a huge developmental role, and certainly nature is what I felt most drawn to photograph in those early days. I’d often find myself witness to these unbelievably beautiful sunsets, but having noone to share the moment with. But with a camera in hand not only could I share these scenes but I could preserve the moment in time indefinitely.
Circa 2003 I took an art class, it was taught in traditional mediums but I learned a lot about compositions (rule of thirds, leading lines, golden ratio, negative space, etc.), colour theory, and perhaps most importantly, how to capture and translate the “emotion” of a scene. In 2005 I decided to take the next step and enrol in a course to learn how to use my camera to its fullest potential. It was there I learned all the fundamentals of photography as well as the science and mechanics of a proper camera.
Working as a baker, I spent the years that followed photographing in my spare time. I broadened into shooting food, architecture, portraits, night photography, you name it. What drove me most was a desire to apply that philosophy I’d learned in art class to photography. To photograph a scene not simply to portray how it looked, but to portray how it felt at the time. That’s what I wanted to capture and immortalise. In fact, that is still what I strive to do.
In 2007 I embarked on a significant journey, leaving Montana. I first spent a year in Seattle where I enjoyed shooting the sprawling cityscape and unique architecture, as well as seascapes and nature in nearby Olympic National Park.
The winds of change blew stronger still and swept me 4,450 miles from the Emerald City 4,450 miles to the Emerald Isle. I immigrated to Ireland in 2008, eventually setting roots in a small house on the sea in Skerries, where the front window was a frame for constant inspiration. Skerries is a photographer’s dream where the Sun rises and sets over the Irish Sea. With the natural beauty of its Islands and unique geography coupled with historic windmills and towers, I’m never short on scenes that captivate my interest.
Along the way I suppose there were slow murky shifts from being better described as a “hobbyist” to an “enthusiast” and eventually it started to bleed over into my ‘real job’ and become part of my job description. Suddenly my employer was getting asked what professional they’d hired for their food and branding photography. Other cafés and restaurants began approaching me seeking my photography services.
Big changes often come in the most unexpected ways. When a tragedy struck and the business closed its doors permanently, I had to make a choice. Either find another kitchen to chef in, or heed the growing interest in my photography and take a leap of faith.
The foolhardy encouragement of my family drowned out the dull voices of reason within me that argued for the security of regular paychecks in a stable job. With nothing to lose except everything, I pivoted.
Photography became the main gig. And here we are. Freelance is terrifying. Please hire me. Or buy a print.
